1. Intro
Greetings Everyone!

The virtual Fall Opener meeting was held on September 13, 2021.  This was the first meeting of the 2021-2022 year and details of the meeting are below in Section 2.  Star Valley Chapter future meetings will continue to be virtual for at least the near future; details on how to sign up are below in Section 3
 
Hey, speaking of ASSP, there is a proposed change to the ASSP governance process;  keep reading in Section 4 to see how you can get details and provide feedback.  This change may be discussed at the ASSP Leadership Conference which will be held next month: October 21-22; read below for details on that *FREE* conference in Section 5.  
 
That's not the only conference going on though: the VOSH Training Conference coming right up on October 6-7.  Sign ups are coming on the DOLI webpage as you'll see in Section 6.  
 
DOLI has also adpoted a new COVID Standard that you can access in Section 7.  Check it out.  
 
All that training may help you out in your next career.  We've got one in Section 8 so take a look or pass it on!.

2. Fall Opener Recap (September 2021 Meeting Minutes)
Introduction: 
 
The first meeting of the Chapter year hosted 8 attendees.  Chapter President Carlton Davis opened the meeting and moderated a discussion including plans for 2021-2022, topics for presentation, and solicitation for input on a change to the House of Delegates governance.  
 
Solicitation of Speakers and Topics: 
 
We are actively soliciting speakers for this year.  Topics from Asbestos to Zero-Injury Workplaces, Bloodborne Pathogens to Noise Hazards are all welcome.  If you have an on-site demonstration, we look forward to scheduling that when in-person meetings are back.  We may also look at online resources for shared viewing during meetings.  If you have a topic to share, please get in touch with Carlton or Jesse via email. 
 
Discussion Topics: 
 
  • Virtual Meetings: For the upcoming meeting(s), virtual approach will continue.  We look forward to face to face as we are able.  
  • ASSP House of Delegates Governance: Proposed changes to ASSP governance require feedback to our Delegate, Carlton Davis.  See below for details.  
  • ASSP Leadership Conference:  Annual meeting with virtual attendance this year.  See below for details. 
  • LinkedIn Presence: Visit the new ASSP Star Valley ChapterLinkedIn Page.  This will become another avenue of communication and a hub for networking.  Please follow and be on the lookout for interactive content, posts, jobs, et cetera.  
  • Job Postings: If you have job posting, please send them to Carlton or Jesse; we can put them in the newsletter, on the webpage, and elsewhere.  
  • Student ASSP Section: Rebecca Flanyak is continuing to pursue establishing the Student ASSP group at Liberty University under the tutelage of Dr. Diana Schwerha (https://www.liberty.edu/engineering/faculty/diana-schwerha/).  Approval through Student Government Association will be sought soon to formalize the group as a Club.  
3. Upcoming Events

4. ASSP Governance Changes & House of Delegates

Changes to the ASSP have been proposed; a vote is currently scheduled for January 2022. Over a dozen "listening sessions" have taken place for informational and feedback. 

Carlton Davis is our Delegate and invites questions related to the vote. A virtual House of Delegates meeting is scheduled for September 28, 2021 which will: 

  • Provide more information on the task force process.
  • Ask questions and listen to your feedback.
  • Train delegates on the virtual technology that will be used for the vote in January 2022.
Carlton will continue to communicate information on this in coming meetings and welcomes questions.  Now is the time to communicate our preferences on the way the Star Valley Chapter will vote.

5. ASSP Leadership Conference
The ASSP Leadership Conference is scheduled for October 21-22, 2021 and is a VIRTUAL EVENT.  This event is open to executive committee members and any potential Chapter leaders.  This means you!  
 
There are a lot of reasons to attend 
  • Develop leadership skills that you can transferable to the workplace
  • Share best practices and meet key ASSP leaders
  • Network with other leaders in safety to find solutions to your latest challenges
  • Earn continuing education units for attending the conference
 
The Program Schedule outlines a lot of sessions you may find valuable.

6. Virginia Occupational Safety and Health Conference

The Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) is 2021 VOSH Training Conference is a virtual event open to the public.

The Conference will be held October 6-7, 2021 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. each day.

This training event boasts 20 breakout sessions covering a broad range of safety and health topics as well as 2 keynote speakers and an opportunity to virtually meet with industry vendors. A detailed agenda and registration link will be posted soon.

7. Virginia Department of Labor & Industry COVID Standard

A Revised Virginia Standard For Infectious Disease Prevention Of COVID-19 was adopted August 26, 2021

As noted on the DOLI website: 

The Safety and Health Codes Board held a meeting on August 26, 2021 and adopted as final, revised amendments to the VOSH Standard for Infectious Disease Prevention (VS), of the SARS-CoV-2 Virus.

8. Career Opportunities
CURRENT OPENINGS:
 
Safety Manager: Archer Western a member of The Walsh Group, is currently seeking a Safety Manager, a lead role as a Transportation Project HSE Manager, for a $180M job on I-81 between Roanoke and Salem.  Check out the JOB LISTING for details. 
 
 
Future openings:
We are always looking to network and find out if there are job openings. The jobs must be in an Environment, Health and Safety function. For example: Fleet Safety Manager, Director of Environmental, Health and Safety, Risk Manager, etc.

We will post the jobs to our website and include them in the newsletter. This is done currently at no charge, but the chapter is always accepting donations to help establish our scholarship fund. Your contribution is appreciated.
